Where the credit should go. For those of you that have been here for some time you will remember each year or two the site swaps servers when the renewal rates go up or support is lousy. That is the typical business model to double or triple rates thinking the cost of moving has a lot of friction involved. And, for most sites it isn't a big deal to shell out $500-$1000 annually. On BT, they charge vendors that much for each vendor and there's a ton of them shelling out to reach tens of thousands of Beech flyers. That makes sense.

- Upwork has freelancers all over the world for almost any area of expertise.
This January I decided to move to Azure (Microsoft cloud platform) since I had been doing some client work there and it was fast and easy to use and the price is right as the company tries to compete with Amazon and other cloud vendors.

- Azure platform is full featured, powerful, can be overwhelming sometimes
I'm not a Linux expert but I was running my own servers from home way back when redhat first was sold at Radio Shack almost two decades ago. My first TBM 700 owner site was served from my living room. So, when I decided to migrate to Azure I used a VM (virtual machine) pre-packaged linux server plus email server, subdomains for testing and a place for the LancairParts.store. It takes roughly 125 processes that make a server like this run properly and safely but most of it is packaged and auto-installing. Most of it.
So, it took a few days to get the site working but I failed many days at the email since I was actually running about 4 virtual sites into one server. Plus, I was in Mexico which slowed the pace of progress. So, when I came home I decided to look for an expert to advise on the best setup and fix a few issues. I placed an open contract requesting some help.

- BT is not shy about fees to be present on the site. Sponsors pay thousands annually. BT wanted almost a $1000 for me to list my transponder worth $2000. Nothing cheap at Beech.
I do some freelance work on various platforms on a place called Upwork.com. I also hire freelancers for stuff and often I find terrific people. I found a trademark expert in Toronto, a logo designer in India and I've contracted my services to dozens of clients with interesting problems in data manipulation and progamming. On Tuesday of this week I received a proposal from Asfahani in Indonesia, literally 5 minutes after I posted a list of stuff I needed fixed. I looked at his credentials as system administator, freelance earnings more than $US100k and he currently had 50+ clients all providing 5/5 star reviews. I didn't even interview, I just hit the hire button.

- LancairTalk purring away at its new home barely ticking over 0% CPU.
I could not keep up as he did a quick review of the server and suggested a different setup on a different platform. He just kept getting things done so quickly I barely had time to feed my list as he was knocking this off. Passwords and details were flying around and before I could organize my side, he was ready for the next problem. He fixed the email servers, re-designed the website operations, moved everything to Dallas, created auto backups on Amazon servers in Ohio every night, automated the site software upgrades, implemented tight security on all the access, fixed about 20 things that were bugging me and that I had probably caused myself (permissions, user ids, directory structures, spam detection software and much more).
Tonight my time, 7am in Indonesia, we made the final swap over to a new server with double CPU and a better layout than what I had planned. It took him literally 30 minutes tonight to make the swap and normally it takes me days. So, this expert, sysadmin for institutions and helping clients worldwide gets $18/hour. The whole week of help was maybe $200 which is funded by the donations received. And, he was polite, fast, expert at his tasks, never made a mistake, showed me some things I had never seen before for sharing sensitive data and made things very easy this week. So, if anyone needs linux platform admin help or AWS or systems advice he is a wonderful soul in the tech world.
My plan is to keep his contract open and whenever I need advice he just pops up online and fixes it. I still have never talked face-to-face. We did all that with chat. His work has allowed some time to look at the LancairParts.store to see if it makes sense and also to complete the import of all those old LML messages that have a lot of value for builders today.
Tonight, I'm pretty happy that things are in good hands for the next few years for sure. I've got a really good guy to help if needed and the basics are covered in security, backup and site operations. Now, to get my ADS-B flight test done and collect my $500 rebate!
